Order of the Arrow
On May 18-20 we held a successful Ordeal &
Brotherhood weekend. There were 37 Ordeal members, 16 sealing their
membership in Brotherhood, and 24 on staff. Greg Drenning, Jr. served as
Ordeal master. The youth staff included: Service Chairman - Seth Ensor,
Ceremonies Chair - Justin Lloyd, and Ceremonies Team - Marshall Jay, Dan
Neighoff, Trevor Echols, Jeff Sommer, Chris Greene and Chris Hess.
Elangomat Chair was Marshall Jay and his team included Paul Strayer,
David Gamerman, Alex Jones, Ryan Bogart, Trevor Echols & Chris Brooks.
Special thanks to A.J. Eckstein [Brotherhood] & Dave Fitch [Service],
and to the elders: Bryan Maynard [ser-vice], Dave Peters [ceremonies],
Charles Jay [Elangomats], Robby Cohen, Don Martin [Brotherhood], Mike
Spencer [Health & Safety] & Mark Sheavly, Greg Drenning Sr. [kitchen,
good and plenty & thanks for my special meal, what ever it was!] and to
all the others who really put fun in cheerful service.
These troops set the example and held to their oath by sealing membership in
Brotherhood: T-18[6], T-97[4], T-143[3], T306[1], T-315[3], 456[1], T-634[4] at
our weekend and at Spring Fellowship. We challenge all units to encourage Ordeal
members with 10 months tenure attending Broad Creek Summer Camp & a large group
to attend the Fall Fellowship on Sept. 7-9, setting the example to those who
chose you by sealing your membership in Brotherhood. We also will have a Vigil
candidate called out Friday 9/7.
The 2008 officers:
Chief: Marshall Jay T-18
Vice Chief: Dan Neighoff T-307
Vice Chief: Gregory Drenning Jr. T-143
Vice Chief: Jeff Sommer
Secretary: Jesse Halpern
What makes a Scout an member of the Scouting Honor Society?
He's a First class [or higher] a camper, who has attended
long term summer camp, and has 15 overnighters in the last 2 years. He has the
support of his parents or guardians, and his Scoutmaster has recommended him to
be part of the Troop's Order of the Arrow's election. If he is elected by his
fellow scouts, meaning he needs a majority of votes by his peers of his troop,
the Troop also needs to have a majority of registered scouts attending. He will
attend an ordeal weekend, Arrowhead's is May 18-20, 2007 [there are others], on
Friday evening, attend a Pre-Ordeal ceremony, sleep under the stars, do cheerful
service to Broadcreek on Saturday, attend another ceremony on Saturday evening,
and be fully inducted as a member.
Why not give the scout[s] an opportunity to do this?
Well sometimes an adult doesn't want a scout to be a
member, maybe the troop doesn't go camping, maybe they don't advance, but those
that do, should call me @410-922-1377 or email at
dirubin@juno.com, we will set up the Troop
election, confirm with the Scoutmaster or SA, then conduct the election. We [the
Chapter officers, or chairman] need at least 2 weeks notice, to eliminate having
2 on the same night, all should be done by April 13th. You will find out that a
member of the Order of the Arrow, stays in scouting longer, may become a
chairman or officer himself, gives back to Scouting to those who chose him.
Sound good?
Sure is, and for the adult, one for every 50 registered
scouts may be recommended by the Troop Committee, but only after at least one
scout is elected first.
In cheerful service:
David I. Rubin
Chapter Adviser
